OKLAHOMA CITY- On a very wet and stormy evening, a group of Nowata County advocates traveled down to Oklahoma City, Okla. for the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association’s (OTIA) RedBud Awards Gala. Open to all Oklahoma tourism entities, the RedBud Awards represent the highest honor given in the Oklahoma tourism industry. The awards were based on events, marketing campaigns, or partnerships that took place in the year 2014.

The evening featured seventeen award categories and one lifetime achievement award. The Nowata Area Chamber of Commerce received a nomination for the “Best Website” category, for their efforts in the launch of the new Nowata.com website.

Emceed by Oklahoma Lt. Governor Todd Lamb and host of the Discover Oklahoma TV series, Jennifer Reynolds, the Nowata.com website received a Merit Award for Best Website. In a night that featured nominees from all over the state of Oklahoma, including city tourism and tribal tourism organizations, it was Nowata County that would garner the spotlight on the travel industry’s brightest stage.

Nowata County Community Manager Anthony Tucker reflects on the award.  “Tonight’s recognition is a testament to the type of people we have in Nowata County. We are a strong people, who believe that much is earned when one works for it, not handed it,” said Tucker. “When looking at other nominees’ marketing budgets I saw projects that totaled nearly half a million dollars. Our project didn’t cost our taxpayers a dime. We received a grant from AEP-PSO for $500 and turned it into our county’s biggest marketing weapon and now, an award winner.” Tucker went on to say, “I hope that this award will help serve as a catalyst for those back in Nowata County unaware of the economic growth that is taking place, to become aware of it and get involved with it. While lastly, for one night we had everyone in the room saying ‘Nowata’-if they didn’t know about our potential, they do now.”

Representatives of Nowata County at the event were Skyler Watters of the Nowata Chamber, Diana Forth of Welch State Bank and the Nowata County Industrial Authority, and lastly, Anthony Tucker.
